A denture is a detachable dental appliance that is made to replace missing teeth and the tissues surrounding them. They are designed to look like natural teeth and can even enhance your smile. Dentures are available in two types: complete dentures and partial dentures. Complete dentures are best for patients who are missing all their teeth whereas partial dentures are recommended for patients who still have some natural teeth. Patients using partial dentures can enjoy the benefits of filling the gaps of missing teeth. Partial dentures also help prevent other teeth from shifting out of position.
A complete denture can be conventional or an immediate denture. Conventional dentures are made for patients after the teeth are removed and once the gum tissues has had time to heal. This process can take anywhere between four to six weeks. During this period, the patient is without teeth. Immediate dentures on the other hand are fabricated in advance and placed immediately after the teeth are removed. This ensures the patient has teeth during the healing period. While the patients gums heal and shrink, immediate dentures will require adjustments.
Dentures at our Danforth dental office are durable and can last for several years. It’s important to note that although dentures are made of high quality materials, they may still require occasional adjustments, repairs or replacement over time due to normal wear and tear.
Common reasons for needing dentures include:
Patients looking to get dentures can expect to have multiple appointments over a few weeks. Accurate impressions and measurements are required when designing a custom denture. It’s normal for trial sessions to occur in order to ensure the perfect shape, colour and fit of your dentures. Upon your last appointment, the dentist will adjust the dentures to make sure they fit comfortably.
Patients should expect increased saliva, minor soreness and some changes while speaking and chewing, these effects are normal and will usually resolve as your mouth adjusts to the changes. Our office will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your dentures. This will include proper cleaning, good oral hygiene and routine dental checkups to ensure a long long-lasting comfort, function, and durability of your new dental appliance.
