What is a tooth extraction?

Teeth extraction as a result of tooth decay

One of the main reasons for teeth being extracted is due to tooth decay. Tooth decay can damage any part of a tooth along with the root. When tooth decay is left untreated, it can get worse and will result tooth extraction. When tooth decay is found during the earlier stages, our Danforth dentist can provide various dental treatments to salvage the tooth. Treatment options such as dental fillings, inlays, onlays, dental crowns and root canal are options that can help restore a damaged tooth and prevent further decay or loss.

Tooth removal as a result of advanced periodontal disease

Periodontal disease is also known as gum and bone disease. When caught early, it can be treated at our dental office with dental cleanings, deeper cleanings when needed, and periodontal therapy. When gums are not treated, advanced periodontal disease can occur which will lead bone loss under the tooth. At this stage, periodontal disease will not be treatable as the bone has already deteriorated and can no longer hold the tooth securely in place.

Trauma induced tooth extraction

In many cases, teeth can be salvaged during fracture utilizing dental procedures such as bonding or dental crowns. However when the fracture is extensive and reaches the tooth’s root, the tooth may require an extraction. A fractured tooth will not heal like bones in a patients body. When a fractured tooth is left untreated, it will result in pain, primarily when pressure is applied when biting and chewing.

Baby teeth that aren’t falling out

In some situation when a child’s baby tooth does not fall out by itself, the baby tooth may need to be removed by your Danforth dental office. Baby teeth may not fall out as a result of it being blocked by the permanent tooth underneath. To help the permanent tooth come out naturally and as it should, our dentist will remove the baby tooth. If we don’t extract the baby tooth that’s blocking the adult tooth, it could cause problems later on.
