Regular dental checkups play an important role in maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing dental problems from occurring. Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup that daily brushing and flossing can’t fully eliminate, reducing the risk of cavities, gum disease and tooth decay. Dental checkups help our dentist find potential problems at an early stage, such as oral infections or signs of more serious conditions like oral cancer.
During your initial consultation, the dentist will discuss your dental and medical history with you including recent changes in your health and medication. It is very important that your dentist is kept up to date with your health information in order to avoid medical complications and drug reactions during treatment. Once the information is discussed, treatment begins by giving the teeth and gums a thorough cleaning. The cleaning begins by clearing plaque and tartar that has accumulated on the teeth. The cleaning is followed by polishing, removing any excess debris and applying a smooth and shiny surface to your teeth.
Once the cleaning is completed, the dentist will examine all teeth and gums and rule out any swellings, mouth sores or redness; including gum disease. The examining dentist may take a few intra-oral x-rays to ensure tooth decay is not present inside the tooth surface or between the teeth. Once the detailed examinations are complete, the dentist will discuss any potential issues that were found and provide recommendations and treatment options.
