Deep teeth cleaning also referred to as scaling and root planning is a procedure that provides in-depth cleaning below the gum line. This is a two-step process that will clear out plaque and tartar that everyday brushing may not reach. Scaling removes built-up plaque and tartar from the teeth and around the gums, while root planing smooths the roots of the teeth. Smoothing the roots allows gums to reattach and cover areas where bacteria gather, this helps reduce the risks of gum disease.
This can be very helpful for patients that are at the early stages of periodontal disease, characterized by bleeding or tender gums. By reducing bacteria, scaling and root planing can keep the infection from spreading, preventing the disease from getting worse. After treatment, patients often realize their gums are healthier and bleed less when they brush their teeth. Long-term results could be achieved and maintained if these procedures are complemented with frequent dental visits.
