Dental Inlays and Onlays are fillings created out of porcelain material. They are often used as a substitute for a dental crown. Any time a tooth is cracked or when a previous amalgam filling becomes problematic, an inlay or onlay is the recommended solution to repair the tooth. They are very strong and a preferred option for aiding weaker teeth such as molars or teeth located in the back of your mouth.
Inlays are used when the damage is confined to the middle portion of the tooth, between the cusps. The dentist removes the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth with just enough tooth structure to make way for the inlay to perfectly fit into the cavity. This strengthens the tooth while maintaining the tooth’s natural structure.
Onlays are similar to inlays, however an onlay covers a larger area since it extends over one or more of the cusps of the tooth. When the decay or damage involves something more than the center of the tooth, an onlay is the recommended option. Much like inlays, onlays are created to accurately fit your tooth and help you retain as much of your natural tooth as possible.
For cracked or decayed teeth, we use dental Inlays and Onlays as a restoration procedure. The Inlay and Onlay is custom created for your personalized needs. They last a very long time and can be administered within just one visit.
